Over the past week the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) revealed their award listings for Best Cinematography and Outstanding Achievement in Feature Film, respectively. As with the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild, these awards are solid indicators of what the Oscar nominees (announced January 24th) and eventual recipients will be. Hit the jump to check out the lists.
American Society of Cinematographers:
Jeff Cronenweth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Robert Richardson (Hugo)
Hoyte van Hoytema (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life)
Directors Guild of America:
Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris)
David Fincher (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo)
Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist)
Alexander Payne (The Descendants)
Martin Scorsese (Hugo)
And so it goes. I'm torn between The Artist and The Tree of Life in the ASC's list. Both are fine films and two favorites from the past year, and I feel that both deserve the award. Sadly, that won't be happening. However, only one of those films (The Artist) is nominated for a DGA award. With The Tree of Life,Terrence Malick created what I believe will go down as one of the best films of the decade. Perhaps Malick's film will be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, but with no DGA nomination, a Best Director nod or award is probably out of sight. Come January 28th, the Directors Guild of America will host its ceremony, and the American Society of Cinematographers will follow February 12. May the best "artist" win.
