84th Academy Awards Nominations Released: 'Hugo' Gets Eleven Nods and 'The Artist' Ten

Source: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

This past Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) in Los Angeles, California. The Oscars, hosted yearly at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California, are the biggest, though most predictable award ceremony in the movie industry. This year, the Academy decided to change its Best Picture rules once again- instead of the ten nominations that were dolled out in the past two years, the number now varies between five and ten (depending on how many votes a given film receives). There are nine nominees for Best Picture this year, with Hugo and The Artist taking the most nods at eleven and ten, respectively, and War Horse and Moneyball following with six nods each. Hit the break to see the full list of nominations.

It's inevitable that the Oscars will hand out a few snubs and upsets amongst its list of nominees. I cannot say anything much about the snubs personally, though I have heard that Michael Fassbender's performance in Shame is terrific. On the the other hand, having seen Elizabeth Olsen's fantastic performance Martha Marcy May Marlene, I get the feeling that either Hollywood had an influx of award worthy acting or Olsen got snubbed. However, I am happy that The Tree of Life is nominated for Best Picture and Best Director- the film is getting some more recognition than what I had thought. Speaking of the Best Picture award, The Artist has an almost sure-fire chance of winning the category after winning the equivalent Producers Guild of America award for best film last week. If The Artist succeeds, it will be the first time a black and white, silent film has won the award since Wings received the very first Best Picture Oscar in 1927.

Billy Crystal will host the 84th Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre on Sunday, February 26.
