2011 Producers, Screen Actors, and Writers Guilds' Nominations Released

Source: /Film (Producers, Screen Actors, Writers)

Three weeks ago the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) nominations were announced, and the 2011 Annual Producers Guild of America Awards'(PGA) and the Writers Guild of America Awards' (WGA) nominations were revealed this past week, respectively. These awards are often the best indicator of what films will be nominated for a given year's Oscars, as there is a lot of member overlap between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the various guilds. The Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild cover both television and film awards, though only movie-related nominations will be posted here. Nomination lists can be seen after the break.

There you go. For starters, it's too bad that The Help is getting so much press with it's PGA and SAG nominations, à la The Blind Side back in 2009. The book on which The Help is based is more or less a manifestation of white guilt. In my humble opinion, members of the Academy should not be promoting a movie that continues to pretty up racism for white audiences (where's Spike Lee when we need him?). To be fair, I haven't seen the movie, though I'm sure it's well done given all the press it received.

As always, there are hits and misses during award season. However, having seen so few awards contenders this year, there isn't much for me to say. Hopefully I'll be able to catch more Oscar bait-ers as they hit the rental stores. My Top Ten of 2011 should be coming in the next month or so.

The PGA will reveal its awards on January 21st, with SAG following on January 29th, and the WGA on February 19th.
