The official U.S. trailer for the silent Cannes favorite The Artist appeared online today. The black and white film focuses on silent film actor Geroge Valentin's fall from stardom, as well as the subsequent rise of Peppy Miller, a love interest. Director Michael Hazanavicius' movie gained a boatload of buzz at Cannes this year, some of which lead to a hint of Best Picture talk. See the offical synopsis (from Apple Trailers) below.
Hollywood 1927. George Valentin is a very successful silent movie star. The arrival of talking pictures will mark the end of his career. Peppy Miller, a young woman extra, becomes a major movie star.Having watched almost no silent films, much of my excitement (and/or curiosity) towards The Artist stems from the opportunity to see a current movie embody such a relatively old style. I'm already in love with the old school imagery, especially the painting and trantrum-like shots near the end of the trailer. Given the fact that audiences have been experiencing films with sound for the last 80 years or so, I'm interested to see what the broader opinion will end up being. It seems apparent that The Artist will be receiving a fair amount of attention come Oscar season, and given the footage here (plus the buzz out of Cannes) that will most likely be the case. Check out the trailer below.
On a side note: with The Artist, The Iron Lady, My Week With Marilyn, and Corolianus all set for releases this fall, it looks like the Weinstein Company will be having a pretty exciting time come awards season.
The Artist will be hitting theaters November 23.
