Yesterday Pixar revealed the official synopsis for its new fantasy film Brave. After releasing a teaser back in June and giving out some new facts at Disney's D23 Expo last week, there is now some word as to what the movie is really about. (FYI: before this info was let out of the bag, the only details on the story were that Brave would be a fantasy, taking place in Scotland, and starring a bow-wielding ginger named Merida). Check out the full synopsis after the break.
"Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.
I suppose it's a little redundant towards the end there, but otherwise Brave sounds solid to me. Pixar's first foray into fantasy (as well as their first film with a female lead) looks to be an epic and well animated one at that. See the teaser below.Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.
Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humor enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.A grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor, “Brave” uncovers a new tale in the mysterious Highlands of Scotland where the impetuous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) defies an age-old custom and inadvertently unleashes chaos, forcing her to discover the meaning of true bravery before it’s too late."
How 'bout them apples? I don't know about you all, but I think this is already looking spectacular. The animation looks as gorgeous as ever and the voice work sounds great too. Although the teaser wasn't too Pixar-ish per se, a few tid bits surely are (Lord Macintosh cannot be anything but a reference to one of Pixar's most influential figures, Steve Jobs). The film has been mentioned to be a bit darker than usual, though the signature humor from Studios is said to be intact. On a side note, the bear at the end of the teaser is named Mordu. He's supposedly one of the principle villains of the film, and Pixar has described him as "Moby Dick on Land" The wait for Brave is going to be just unbearable.
You can also view a pretty little poster for the film here.
Brave will be day walking it into theaters June 22, 2012, in Disney Digital 3-D.
