The first trailer for director Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class came online today via Youtube. The new X-Men movie is a prequel to the others, and may be the start of a new, darker trilogy. This one focuses on the formation of the X-Men and the eventual rift between Professor X and Magneto. Due to the Cold War era and resulting aesthetics, there have comparisons to old-school James Bond movies. We'll see how the global espionage shtick turns out in a few months. See the official synopsis (via Youtube) below.
X-MEN FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.Maybe it's the quality of this trailer, or the recent trend of previews to show the whole movie, but my first impression of X-Men: First Class is a mixed one. The trailer shows little action, which to some degree is precisely what trailers should be doing, and gives a good sense of the plot. However, the small amount of excitement makes me feel a little disappointed compared to other trailers. But I'm anxious to see more. I think the 60's feel could work out very well, especially with the connection to the Cold War. I also love the brief taste of action revealed- yup, Magneto is controlling a frickin' submarine. With Matthew Vaughn directing and a solid pair of leads, I have a pretty good feeling about this one. Let's just hope it's not another X-Men: The Last Stand. Check out the official trailer below!
X-Men: First Class will hit theaters on June 3rd.
